Chirk Aqueduct
looking north toward Wales.
The Chirk Aqueduct (a UNESCO World Heritage site) on the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal carrying the canal across the Ceiriog Valley 20 metres below. The ten circular masonry arches of the structure each span 12 metres and are supported by masonry piers which are hollow at the top. The canal dives into the 421 metre long Chirk Tunnel, proof of the hilly terrain which eventually was to prevent the canal reaching its intended destination of Chester.
